Two Drogheda women with Christmas spirit in bucket loads

26 November 2016 at 12:38

You could say that Niamh Madden and her friend Colette Farrell have the Christmas spirit, they REALLY have the Christmas spirit - in bucket loads.

The two friends decided at the beginning of November that this Christmas they would try make this time of year a bit brighter for people who need it.

They started a Facebook page called Stockings for the Streets and asked individuals, shops and companies to donate items such as personal hygiene products and warm clothing such as hats, scarfs, socks and gloves with which they are making up hampers for the homeless and others in need in Drogheda this Christmas.

The response has been fantastic, so much so that they are hoping to make up 50 hampers and will be distributing them in the run up to Christmas to Drogheda Homeless…  Learn more

My Streets Drogheda

17 February 2015 at 16:16

Drogheda Homeless Aid in association with Drogheda Civic Trust and with the support of State Street Drogheda, launched on the 29th January 2015 an innovative new programme called My Streets Drogheda.

The vision of My Streets Drogheda is the empowerment of the former and current homeless population of Drogheda to take positive action within their own lives and support them in the process of regaining their own confidence and playing a positive role in the community. This is to be achieved through teaching and training clients and recently resettled people of Drogheda Homeless Aid to provide personalised walking tours of "their" town.

The idea was inspired by similar projects in Canterbury, Prague, London, Barcelona and Berlin whereby social enterprise was recognised as being capable of creating a positive perception of homeless people as well as generating employment to reintegrate former homeless…  Learn more

Mental health talks

The programme was facilitated by Drogheda Homeless Aid staff member Emma Moore and our volunteer Luke. We visited 10 schools and youth groups in the Louth area and delivered the programme to nearly 130 young people. The programme was very well received by all participants and we feel that it has made a big difference to their understanding of mental health issues.

This project was funded by the Community Foundation of Ireland under their Caring Communities Grant Scheme.

The amount of money collected was well up on last year, an indication of the support the organisation enjoys in Drogheda, South Louth and Mid-Louth.

We know that many people have suffered in the recession and that money was short, and of course there are many other charities calling for support - but the community made the extra effort to fill our collection buckets.

Drogheda Homeless Aid Chairperson’s welcome

03 September 2014 at 10:34

All of us in Drogheda Homeless Aid – our staff and board members – try to reach out with our hearts to homeless men or those who may be at risk of homelessness. The hostel at North Strand, Drogheda offers shelter and support in an “open door” policy that has existed for many years.

We can offer support, advice and counselling to people who come to our door and, most importantly, we are not judgmental. Every person is worthy of dignity and respect and these principles are embedded in our organisation.

There are many reasons as to why people become homeless – mental health problems, addiction, poverty, breakdown in relationships and we try hard to see how we can help the individual, giving them a safe haven for a short period while they try to get…  Learn more
